Modernizing and preparing the Australian Military
Introduction: The Australian military requires immediate modernization to deter potential threats, particularly from China. Current plans, such as the nuclear submarine program, are insufficient to address immediate concerns.
To address the growing threat from China and ensure regional security, Australia should:
Lease later-model Los Angeles-class attack submarines with vertical launch capability: These submarines would provide enhanced capabilities, including the ability to launch long-range cruise missiles.
Lease six to nine B-1 bombers: These bombers would offer significant air power and the ability to strike targets deep within enemy territory.
Convert the two LHDs to aircraft carriers capable of carrying F-35 fighters: This would significantly enhance Australia's air power capabilities and ability to project force in the region.
Increase amphibious landing ability: Investing in additional amphibious assault ships and landing craft would allow Australia to conduct more effective amphibious operations, supporting land forces and projecting power ashore.
Prioritize ground-launched land-attack missiles: These missiles would provide a long-range strike capability and deter potential aggressors.
Invest in advanced air defence systems: These systems would help protect Australia's airspace and critical infrastructure from air threats.
Benefits of Leasing:
Speedier acquisition: Leasing allows for a faster acquisition of military assets, providing immediate capabilities to address pressing threats.
Cost-effectiveness: Leasing can be a more cost-effective option compared to purchasing new equipment, especially for high-cost assets like submarines and bombers.
Flexibility: Leasing provides flexibility in terms of duration and the ability to adjust the agreement as needed.
Risk mitigation: Leasing can help mitigate risks associated with developing and deploying new military technology.
